Domain transfers, renewals and locks: what to check first

A practical preparation list for moving a domain while preserving ownership, service continuity and the ability to recover it.

Check eligibility before starting

Read the current registrar’s transfer requirements and the rules for your extension. Confirm the domain status, contact email, expiration date and applicable locks. Country-code extensions may use a process different from a generic domain.

ICANN’s transfer policy allows restrictions during certain 60-day periods, including initial registration and a registrar transfer. A change of registrant may also trigger a lock under the applicable process. Check the actual status instead of assuming a domain can move immediately.

Treat authorization codes as private

An authorization code can enable a transfer. Reveal it only when needed and submit it through the gaining registrar’s trusted flow. Do not include it in public screenshots, shared project notes or an ordinary social message.

Verify both the losing and gaining registrar’s confirmation messages. A transfer request can be pending even when a payment has succeeded.

Preserve DNS continuity

Before moving, record nameservers and the services attached to the domain. Understand whether the current registrar also provides DNS hosting that might end after the transfer. Prepare the replacement record set if necessary.

Transfer and website migration are different operations. Changing both at once makes unexpected failures harder to diagnose.

Keep renewal and recovery separate

Review the renewal price and expiration notices. Expired domains can pass through different stages, with changing fees and recovery options. Registry and registrar rules determine what is possible; a redemption period is not a promise that a name will always be recoverable.

NeoDomains provides portfolio, transfer and renewal management workflows. Read the exact term, charges and status for the action you are taking, and wait for registrar confirmation before calling it complete.

If a name is important to the business, give more than one authorized team member a documented recovery route without sharing passwords or transfer codes broadly.
